Formerly known as Southampton Municipal Golf Course, the main 18-hole layout here was completed in 1935, although it wasn't until after the war that it was playable throughout the year. The course was designed by five times British Open Champion J.H. Taylor, although some ponds and water hazards have been added since the course opened. Previously this was an Open Championship qualifying venue; the Southampton Men's Amateur is still held on the course each June.

This course is owned by the City of Southampton and operated by MyTimeGolf. The Southampton Golf Club also is based at this course.
