GOLF HISTORY LESSON:
It was at this Long Island course that J.B. Coles Tappan invented a match play-scoring system now known around the world as a "nassau."
It was also here that the legendary amateur Bobby Jones (1902-1971) acquired the now-famous "Calamity Jane" putter from head professional Jim Maiden (brother of Stuart Maiden, Jones' coach); this putter is now in the USGA museum in New Jersey for all visitors to see. (The club's web site explains these two stories in some fascinating detail on the "History" page.)
Nassau CC is a private club open only to members and their invited guests.
