RWGC formed in April of 1895 as Wellington Golf Club, then moved to the current site in April of 1908, when the course opened. The club received their "royal" designation from Queen Elizabeth II on June 10, 2004. Turner-MacPherson Golf Design are preparing to oversee some changes to the coursel the work began on February 1, 2011.
While this is a private members club, they do allow limited access for visitors during the week with advance reservations. Unaffiliated golfers from NZ must be accompanied by a member (NZ$80), while guests of members pay NZ$60. The rate for unaccompanied players from outside NZ is $150.
