The then-Australian Open Champion, Carnegie Clark, was the original designer of RQGC, though in 1926 Alistair MacKenzie redesigned several holes. In 2005, the Queensland State Government decided to build the twin Gateway Bridge over the course, forcing the loss of seven original holes, replaced with redesigns by Michael Clayton. Clayton himself won the 1978 Australian Amateur Championship when it was held at Royal Queensland.
