This private club formed in 1894 and moved to its current site at Otahuhu in April 1910. It is generally regarded as one of the best and toughest parkland-style courses in NZ; it has hosted the New Zealand Open, New Zealand Amateur, and the 2006 Bonallack Trophy.
In 2017, the next door Grange Club closed and has amalgamated with Royal Auckland. They are in the process of building a 27 hole course covering both properties. The new club is now known as the Royal Auckland and Grange Golf Club
Visitors may play the course only as the guest of a member, or as a member of a club with reciprocal arrangements.
