This private club formed in 1896, although the current site opened in 1904 with eighteen holes designed by Carnegie Clark. Dr Alistair MacKenzie was engaged in 1926 to advise on changes to the design. Later, an additional nine-hole layout was completed and used until 1999, when it was incorporated into a redesign of the main course, which now totals 21 holes. Hence, there is an "Old Course" routing (par-71) and a "New Course" routing (par-72).
