The land at Sutton Hall Golf Club is an ancient site with documented ownership dating to the 1100s. The spring-fed lake in front of the clubhouse was constructed several hundred years ago to use the water flow to drive a mill for grinding corn in medieval times. Many of the holes are called after the eighteenth century field names in which they are situated. Construction of the course began in 1994; it opened on October 14, 1995 with the clubhouse following one year later.
