Arnold Palmer and his golf architecture firm created this prairie-style design on the southwest side of the city following the devastating 1997 Red River flood. Today, King's Walk is arguably the most popular course in the Red River Valley and ranked among the best in the state.
Palmer's team took a completely flat site (remnant of ancient Lake Agassiz) and moved over 650,000 cubic yards of earth, resulting in rolling, tumbling terrain that sweeps over hundreds of swales, deep ravines, steep ridges, and two large lakes. Large bent-grass greens are well-protected and framed by sculpted bunkers, mounds, and collection areas. Tall fescue adds to the prairie dunes flavor of the course, which includes a double-sided practice range, an 8,000 square-foot putting green, a chipping green, and a practice bunker.
King's Walk is owned and operated by the Grand Forks Park District, so it is very much open to the public; the standard walking rate is $45 (carts are $16/person). Juniors and club-cardholders receive various discounts, while season passes and several stay-and-play packages are also offered. A strong junior golf program is based here as well.
