This course was nicknamed "Hogan's Alley" by Jimmy Demaret after the late Ben Hogan won the 1947 and 1948 Los Angeles Opens and the 1948 U.S. Open championship here. (The club still hosts the PGA Tour's annual Los Angeles stop.) George C. Thomas's original 1926 design remains largely intact, with only minor modifications and a 1992 restoration by traditionalist architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

While the finishing hole is very often photographed for its location below the clubhouse, the par-3 6th hole is more famous for having a bunker in the middle of the green.
